TODDLER SLEEP & BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT

A comprehensive approach to sleep, behaviour and the patterns that connect them.

Toddler Sleep & Behaviour Support is the deeper level of virtual support I may recommend when your child’s sleep is closely connected with behaviour, boundaries, nap transitions, changing sleep needs or other factors that need to be worked through together.

What happens at bedtime can start much earlier in the day

At two to four years, I’m often looking at sleep and behaviour together. A child taking a long time to fall asleep, repeatedly leaving their room or needing a parent beside them may need changes to settling or the way boundaries are being handled. But I also need to consider whether their nap still suits their sleep needs, whether the timing of their day is working, whether feeding or nutrition is relevant, and what they have learnt to expect when bedtime begins.

That distinction matters because changing the response at bedtime will not necessarily address something happening elsewhere. I work out which factors I think are relevant, how they are interacting and what I would prioritise before deciding how I want the family to respond.

How Toddler Sleep & Behaviour works

01

Deeper intake and assessment

You’ll complete a comprehensive intake covering your child’s sleep and the areas I need to assess in more detail, including behaviour, development and current bedtime dynamics. I’ll review this information before developing your Family Sleep Strategy.

02

Comprehensive Family Sleep Strategy

I’ll develop your written Family Sleep Strategy from the deeper assessment, with my recommendations for your child’s sleep and the behaviour, boundaries and other factors I think need to be addressed alongside it.

03

60 minute strategy consultation

Once you’ve read your strategy, we’ll meet for 60 minutes on Google Meet to work through it together, answer your questions and make any final adjustments I think are appropriate before you begin.

04

Two weeks of implementation support

Over two weeks, we’ll have four 20-minute follow-up consultations. Before each one, I’ll review your child’s sleep and behaviour logs and progress so we can work through how they are responding, any questions or implementation difficulties, and whether I recommend continuing as planned or adjusting anything.

FAMILY SLEEP STRATEGY

A clear plan for what needs to change and how I recommend you respond

Your Family Sleep Strategy brings together what I find through the deeper assessment and sets out how I would approach your child’s sleep and the behaviour connected with it.

Depending on what is relevant for your child, this may include a recommended daily rhythm, bedtime and overnight guidance, settling and boundary-setting strategies, nap transition guidance, nutrition recommendations where appropriate, and practical responses for situations such as leaving the room, repeated requests at bedtime or overnight waking. I’ll also include relevant resources where they are useful.

The strategy explains what I think is contributing to the patterns I’m seeing and why I’m recommending each change. That matters particularly with boundaries and settling because knowing what to do is only part of it. You also need to understand why I’m asking you to respond that way when implementation or your child’s response is difficult.

Work through the strategy together before you change the pattern

Once you’ve read your Family Sleep Strategy, we’ll meet for 60 minutes on Google Meet and work through it together. You can ask questions, and I’ll explain how the recommendations apply in practice so you understand what I’m asking you to change, how I recommend you respond and why.

We’ll also talk through situations I think you are likely to encounter once you begin, and make any final adjustments I think are appropriate before you start implementing the strategy.

two weeks of implementation support

Review how your child responds as you implement the strategy

Once you begin implementing your Family Sleep Strategy, your two weeks of implementation support begins. During this period, we’ll have four 20-minute follow-up consultations to review how your child is responding and work through what is happening as you put the recommendations into practice.

Before each follow-up, I’ll review your child’s sleep and behaviour logs and progress. During the call, we’ll work through what I’m seeing, any questions that have come up and anything you’ve found difficult to implement. I’ll clarify what I recommend you continue doing and, where I think an adjustment is appropriate, explain what I would change and why.

With toddlers, implementation gives me information that the assessment alone cannot. I can see what happens when you change a boundary, alter a nap, respond differently at bedtime or change the way your child settles. Their response does not automatically mean the strategy needs changing. It gives me more information to interpret so I can determine whether I think you should continue as planned or whether something needs to be approached differently.

common questions

A few things you may be wondering

Is this mainly about changing my toddler’s behaviour?

Behaviour can be a significant part of Toddler Sleep & Behaviour Support, but I do not interpret it in isolation or assume that every sleep difficulty is fundamentally a behaviour problem. I assess your child’s sleep needs, daily rhythm, naps, development, nutrition, environment, settling and current bedtime dynamics alongside the behaviour you are seeing.

If I think boundaries or the way you are responding at bedtime are contributing, I’ll address those directly. But I do not assume that every child who keeps leaving their room, delays bedtime or protests when something changes needs the same behavioural response.

Will I need to change the boundaries we have at bedtime?

Possibly. At this age, developmentally normal boundary testing and what a child has come to expect at bedtime can both become important parts of the sleep pattern. If I think the current boundaries or responses are contributing, I’ll recommend what I think needs to change and explain why.

That may mean responding differently to repeated requests, leaving the room or other behaviour at bedtime. I’ll also make sure the other relevant pieces are addressed so I’m not asking you to hold a boundary around a problem that needs attention elsewhere.

Does Toddler Sleep & Behaviour Support involve sleep training?

It can include changes to settling when I think the way your child falls asleep is contributing to the problem. Independent settling is an important skill, and I may recommend working on it directly.

Before I decide that, I assess the other factors that may be affecting your child’s sleep, including their sleep needs, nap timing, daily rhythm, environment and what is happening around bedtime. I do not expect a settling method to compensate for something else that needs changing.

What if my toddler is dropping their nap or their sleep needs are changing?

Nap transitions and changing sleep needs are part of what I assess with children this age. If I think the nap, its timing or the amount of daytime sleep is affecting bedtime or overnight sleep, I’ll explain what I recommend and how I would approach the transition.

During the two week implementation period, I can also use what happens after those changes are introduced to decide whether I recommend continuing as planned or adjusting something.

Can I ask questions between the follow-up consultations?

Questions and implementation difficulties are worked through during your four scheduled 20-minute follow-up consultations. There is no messaging or question support between consultations.

If something more urgent comes up, I may be able to bring your next scheduled follow-up forward where my availability allows. This is not always possible, but it gives us some flexibility with the timing of an existing consultation when needed.

I haven’t had a Sleep Clarity Call yet. Can I book Toddler Sleep & Behaviour Support?

The Sleep Clarity Call comes first. I’ll assess your child’s current sleep and recommend Toddler Sleep & Behaviour Support if I think this level of planning and implementation support is appropriate. If you continue into Toddler Sleep & Behaviour Support, the full $150 Sleep Clarity Call fee is credited towards the $750 package price.
